Maia Fjord …
Celebrating the power of the imagination

Paul Klee once observed that “Drawing is taking a line for a walk” and Maia Fjord expresses this notion of freedom beautifully through her singularly distinctive work. In the simplest terms her images evoke an uplifting, feel good ambience and a childlike sense of innocence and optimism. Rich, organic palettes of textured colour breathe life into the wonderfully characterful faces, filtering her vision through a warm, nostalgic lens.

A theme of escapism pervades much of Maia’s work – escaping through the power of the mind to transcend the mundane and the everyday. A celebration of creative thought – and a timely reminder that our brains work better if we unhook them occasionally!

About Maia Fjord

Graduating in 2014 from The Arts University Bournemouth in BA Illustration, Maia brings a unique, richly textured quality to her work. Playful and imaginative , she works predominantly in pencil, subsequently re-colouring in PhotoShop. She often experiments with limited colour palettes, lending her work a warm, organic ambience that belies the involvement of Adobe in any stage of the process. Maia is also a 2014 competition winner, set by Crowd to BA Illustration at Arts University Bournemouth.

Some days you just have to make your own sunshine

The bleak, wintry palette across most of this image is punctured not only by the defiant warmth of the umbrellas, but by the sunny smiles of the individuals sheltering beneath them. A wonderfully contradictory concept, it expresses the power of positive thought to overcome whatever life throws at us from time to time.

More ideas than time

A sentiment that’s all too familiar to the busy creative, “More ideas than time” captures the inability of the hand and the eye to work as fast as the brain. Free-thinking, buzzing with ideas (and caffeine!) the creative is pitted in a race against the clock to capture his thoughts and “bottle” them through the medium of his work.

Creativity is allowing the mind to roam

The beatific, meditative smiles on the faces of our couple capture the essence of blue sky thinking succinctly. By projecting an imagined landscape onto their figures, they literally embody the notion of minds free to roam, elevated above the prosaic and the humdrum by allowing their thoughts to wander at will.

Reality leaves a lot to the imagination

Celebrating the power of fiction to transport the reader to another world, the subject is shown lost in a book – or in a dream-like state – as fantastical woodland creatures look on. Are the creatures merely products of the reader’s imagination – or are they all too real but unnoticed by a reader so lost in thought that they are oblivious to their immediate surroundings…?
