If it doesn’t challenge you, it won’t change you

The first in a series of hand lettered work specially commissioned by Crowd, this piece articulates one of the cornerstones of successful design. Expressing the notion from the perspective of the creative as much as of the audience, it works on two levels. From the creative standpoint, it conveys the sense that, to be truly successful designers, we need to continually stretch ourselves and push back boundaries. And for the audience, there is the sense of challenging the reader in order to engage them and thereby influence them in a positive way.

Smile you’re designed to

Four (OK – four and a half) life-affirming words that are powerfully persuasive. Beautifully framed in Lewis’s distinctive style, the playful juxtaposition of type styles is part and parcel of the message – a timely reminder for the jaded designer that the creative process, work – hey heck, even life – is supposed to be fun. Whether they’re a client, a consumer or just someone in the coffee shop… make someone smile and you’re more than halfway there. This illustration proves the point.

It’s not about being the best, it’s about being better than you were yesterday

As much as any profession, working in design is a journey, a process of growth and self-discovery. The art of the creative is a continual challenge of coming up with better ideas – and making them work harder. Strive today to surpass what you did yesterday and, by definition, you are a better designer. Whilst no one works in a vacuum, neither should the creative process be a competition – what matters most is that we set our own benchmarks and continue to redefine our personal best. Meticulously crafted, Lewis’s visual interpretation expresses this notion succinctly and quite beautifully.

Creativity: Intelligence having fun

Through careful selection of letterforms in this piece, Lewis throws appropriate emphasis on the key words – creativity and fun. Contrasting these with the diligently rendered letterforms of “intelligence”, he expresses the concept of the left and right sides of the brain working in unison to produce work that engages simultaneously on emotional and intellectual levels, as all the best creative solutions do.
